How to Destroy Ta'weez (Amulets)

The word “Ta’weez” is an Urdu representation of the Arabic word “Ta’awwadha”, which is often translated as amulet. The root of this word is “Ya’oodhu” which means to seek protection and refuge. This word is not used specifically by the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم himself but was used by past scholars. The word used in general by the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was “Tameema.”

There are two issues one must understand in regard to using Ta’weez:

The first is that if the Ta’weez contains any form of Shirk, then the scholars have all agreed that this is not allowed and there is absolutely no difference of opinion on this.

The second issue is in regards to the Ta’weez in which only Qur’an or permissible supplications are used. It is on this point that many of the scholars differed.

The correct scholarly view is that Ta’weez are Haram even if they are composed of words from the Qur’an.

The safest is to refrain from using Ta’weez as many contain Shirk.

Rarely, will you find the Ta’weez containing just Qur’an and permissible supplications. Many people find parts of the Qu’ran, grids and boxes with numbers and letters, writing that is incomprehensible, names of angels, names of Jinn, names of people, figures, shapes and symbols such as stars, crosses, drawing, etc. It is important to destroy all types of Ta’weez in your possession.

To begin, you will need the following equipment:

  • A bowl or container, large enough to put the contents and Ruqya water into
  • Water, enough to cover and fully saturate the contents
  • Pliers, scissors, safety blade, file, and other appropriate tools
  • Gloves
  • Safety lighter
  • Fire proof steel bin
  • Clear, flat surface to work on

Safety precautions:

  • Use protective equipment when handling and dismantling the objects
  • Take adequate care when using tools as it can be potentially hazardous when used incorrectly
  • Never leave a burning flame unattended

Directions:

  1. Begin in a state of Wudu
Make wudu, seek refuge in Allah and recite Basmala.
  2. Recite 3 Qul’s
Recite Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Falaq, Surah an-Nas, repeated three times over a container of water.
  3. Place contents of the Ta’weez into the bowl of water
Take whatever is inside the Ta’weez out and place everything in the water including any metal holder and any strings. If there are knots in the string, untie them or cut it with a blade while reciting the 3 Qul’s.
  4. Burn the Ta’weez
After soaking the Ta’weez in water, dry it out and burn it, then dispose of its ashes out of people’s ways i.e in bushes, rivers.
